Hancock County derived its
name from John Hancock, patriot of the American Revolution,
President of the Continental Congress, and lead signer of the
Declaration of Independence.
Located in Eastern
Middle Georgia, it rests on the Fall Line, where the Piedmont becomes
the Coastal Plains and is Georgia's fifth largest county in area--470
sq. miles. Hancock Co. is centrally located 100 miles southeast
of Atlanta, 70 miles southwest of Augusta,
56 miles northeast of
Macon, and 22 miles from Interstate 20.
Sparta has a public library, Chamber of Commerce, museum, Historic Preservation
Group, Lions Club, numerous citizens groups, Sparta-Hancock Development Board, a
VFW post, county extension office and an excellent volunteer fire department
with locations throughout the county. The Sparta Ishmaelite is the county
